Everything you need to know about marble and stone tops.
Marble is a popular choice for table or counter tops in restaurants and hospitality venues. Its strength, durability and unique vein patterns add a touch of luxury to any location. Read our guide on marble table tops and other natural stones.
What is Marble?
As a naturally occurring stone, it has been quarried as far back as the 1st century in Italy, Greece (3rd century), and Turkey (7th century). Marble has been traditionally used in sculptures, monuments, temples and architecture for its beauty and longevity.
The quality of marble depends on where it is taken from in the quarry. When taken from a higher spot the stone will be stronger but have less veining, making it more affordable. However, mining from a deeper spot will find more delicate marble with more attractive veins and a higher contrast in its colouring, making it more expensive.
While Carrara and Calacatta marble are mined in the same region of Italy the difference between the two are clear. Carrara has a grey hue with a soft grain and spidery veins compared to Calacattas warm white background and bold, often coloured, veins which make for a more dramatic feature.
Granite
Granite is another naturally occurring stone, specifically an igneous rock.
This material is extremely hard, which make granite very resistant to scratches, heat and wear.
Similar to marble and other natural stones, it requires sealing due to its porosity.
Terrazzo
Terrazzo is a composite material of marble chips set into cement. The properties of the concrete mean that terrazzo is tough and long lasting making it a great option for tiles, table tops and counters.
However, as both marble and cement are porous, terrazzo is susceptible to staining and acid etching. Regular maintenance and cleaning is required to keep the terrazzo looking its best.
Choosing a darker colour will offset the appearance of staining and etching.
Quartz
Quartz is an attractive manufactured stone, very resistant to staining due to its non-porous properties.
Quartz is a popular choice for table tops for its looks and ease to clean, especially as an alternative to natural porous materials such as marble.

Stone tops should be finished to protect them from staining and acid etching.
Honed surfaces will have a smooth matte finish which will highlight the stone’s natural beauty but they are more liable to scratching than polished tops.
Polished and sealed tops can have either a high or low shine and will take on a darker hue which enhances the contrast in the stone. Polishing also helps the stones resistance to staining but will not prevent it completely.
Regular maintenance will be needed to ensure the quality of cleaning, including frequent cleaning with warm soapy water and re-applying a stone sealant.

Marble tops can be cut to a variety of shapes and sizes and finished with a range of different edge profiles or with a metal edge to fit the style of your project. It is also recommended to have a radius on any corners to help prevent damage or chipping.
How to Take Care For Stone Table Tops
Porous stones like marble need particular care to be taken to avoid damage from water or other staining.
Acid etching can affect marble by wearing away a thin layer of the stone and leaving a matte surface. Regular maintenance and proper care while in use.
How to Fix a Stone Table Top
There are two main ways of fixing stones to contract table bases.
- The Stone would be fitted with a bonding board, normally at 18mm thick with the Length and Width tailored to the top size. MDF is used for indoor use and Marine Plywood for external use. Both are either painted black or white.
- The Stone can be fitted with internal threads, positioned precisely where the table base screw holes are. though this is not the advised option as the threads can come loose based on the weight of the base

- Use a soft cloth to wipe down surfaces and remove any spills as quickly as possible.
- Use warm water with a gentle soap to clean. Do not use abrasive, acidic or alkaline products when cleaning.
- Do not put hot items directly on to the surface.
- Re-apply a stone sealant at least once a season.
