Kirkdale Studios’ CSR Journey

Corporate Social Responsibility (and what that means to us)

Promoting ethical and sustainable practices, from the material used in our furniture, to developing opportunities and careers for young industry talent are choices that we are making every day to enrich the future of our industry.

Hello there, fellow design enthusiasts and friends of Kirkdale Studios. We’re thrilled to share our exciting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plans for the next few years. At Kirkdale Studios, we’ve always been passionate about the world of contract furniture and design. Our commitment to the industry and our desire to make a positive impact have driven us to set some ambitious goals intended to give something back.

1. Launching an Apprenticeship Programme

Firstly, we’re exploring the possibility of launching an apprenticeship programme. We recognise that the design industry thrives on fresh talent and innovative ideas. By offering apprenticeships, we aim to nurture young talent, provide them with valuable experience, and help them kick start their careers. Not only does this benefit the industry as a whole, but it also fosters a sense of community and responsibility within Kirkdale. Since we started Kirkdale 2 years ago, fostering young talent and bringing young professionals into the industry has been a keystone of our goals. We have had the pleasure of running 3 successful internships in both our sales and design teams with students from partnered universities.

We understand firsthand the value, skills, and creativity that an internship can bring to us and to them. Testimonials from our incredible interns can be found at the bottom of the page or by clicking here.

2. Embracing Vegan and Cruelty-Free Products

In our continuous effort to promote ethical and sustainable practices, we’re making strides towards offering more vegan and cruelty-free products. This move aligns with our commitment to the environment and animal welfare. By choosing vegan and cruelty-free options, fabrics in particular, we reduce our ecological footprint and contribute to a more compassionate world. We believe that ethical design can be beautiful and responsible, and we want to lead by example.

Vegan and Cruelty-free Fabrics

Vegan or faux leather are great options if youre looking for a ‘cruelty free’ alternative to real leather. They also have the benifit of a more diverse colour range, they are produced on a fabric roll rather than a hide and they are cheaper.  Agua, Panaz and Sunbury design all do excelent ranges of faux leather.

If your looking for another sustainable option, fabrics made from 100% recycled cotton from the fashion industry is a great choice to keep waste out of landfill. Kirkby Design have a beautiful collection of organic, geometric prints that can be used be used from curtains to cushions . Or try the Flow collection, designed for outdoor use and entirely made from recycled PET water bottles

Our growing sustainable range of furniture has all been verified to be made with sustainably sourced, or recycled materials so you can be sure that no damage is sustained to the environment.

3. Sponsoring a Community Scheme in the Design Industry

We firmly believe in giving back to the community that has supported us throughout our journey. To this end, we’re planning to sponsor a community scheme within the design industry. Whether it’s supporting local design events, providing resources for aspiring designers, or collaborating with educational institutions, our aim is to empower the design community and help it flourish.

4. Donating a Portion of Profits to an Industry-Specific Charity

As part of our commitment to enriching the industry we love, we intend to donate a portion of our profits to an industry-specific charity. This charitable endeavour allows us to make a meaningful impact on causes close to our hearts. By contributing to organisations dedicated to supporting design and manufacturing professionals or advocating for sustainable practices, we strengthen our industry from within.

5. Using Sustainable Materials and Encouraging Recycling

In tandem with our dedication to sustainability, we are actively shifting towards the use of sustainable materials in our furniture manufacturing processes. Additionally, we are launching a recycling initiative that encourages the responsible disposal of old furniture products. By employing sustainable materials and promoting recycling, we hope to reduce the environmental impact of our products and inspire a circular approach within the industry.

When browsing our furniture, be sure to look for the recycling icon. It indicates that the materials used in that furniture piece come from sustainable or recycled sources.

6. Becoming Carbon Neutral

Last but certainly not least, we’re actively working towards becoming a fully carbon-neutral company. We understand the importance of environmental responsibility in today’s world and are fully behind the UN’s net zero carbon by 2050 goal. By reducing our carbon footprint, offsetting emissions, and adopting eco-friendly practices, we hope to inspire others in the industry to do the same.  We are always looking for local options to keep emissions down, and we’ve already offset the carbon produced by our own company operations, but the next step is to mitigate the effect caused by external transport, couriers, manufacturing etc. Our aim is to create a more sustainable future for our planet, one step at a time.

Why are we doing all this? Simply put, because we love the design industry. We’re deeply passionate about the beauty and innovation that this field brings to the world. Our CSR initiatives are an extension of that passion. We want to enrich the industry, not just for ourselves but for future generations of designers and furniture enthusiasts.

By launching an apprenticeship programme, embracing ethical products, sponsoring the community, supporting industry charities, and becoming carbon neutral, we hope to set a positive example for our peers and partners. We believe that by collectively taking steps towards a brighter, more responsible future, we can continue to create beautiful, sustainable, and enriching spaces for all.

Thank you for being a part of our journey. Together, we can make the design industry even more vibrant, responsible, and inspiring.  Stay tuned for updates on how our CSR journey progresses.

Our Internships

Fostering new ideas, skills, and opportunities is vital for growth in any industry, and we believe that investing in students and young professionals is the best way to discover these innovative concepts. At Kirkdale, we have successfully conducted three internships that have provided immense value to everyone involved, offering career opportunities and a chance to apply their skills beyond the classroom and into the ‘real world’.

Karina Domanus' Experience with Kirkdale

I have been introduced to this opportunity through my university course director, who came around close to the end of my graduate year and told our course that Kirkdale Studios are looking to take on someone for a CAD technician internship. Since CAD is one of my strong sides, I have decided to apply in order to deepen those skills and gain valuable industry experience that will undoubtedly help me in my future design career development.

From the very beginning, they welcomed me into their collaborative work environment, making me feel like an integral part of their talented team. I was fortunate to have an incredibly supportive mentor who was willing to share their knowledge and guide me through various projects demonstrating Kirkdale Studios commitment to fostering growth in their interns.

One of the standout aspects of my internship was the level of responsibility and autonomy I was entrusted with. I was not confined to mere observational tasks but was actively involved in real projects right from the start. This hands-on approach allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, making the learning process much more engaging and effective. I have created several technical drawings for furniture pieces that were made by contracted manufacturers while I was still working there. Being able to see the physical results of my CAD models and drawings brought me a great sense of accomplishment and confidence in myself as a designer.

Furthermore, the culture of open communication at Kirkdale Studios was genuinely commendable. My colleagues and superiors were always approachable, encouraging open dialogue and actively seeking feedback. This created a comfortable space where I felt comfortable expressing my thoughts and asking questions, even the silliest ones.

Now with a broader skill set and newfound confidence in myself I am ready to embark on my design career. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Kirkdale Studios to any aspiring individual looking to explore the world of furniture design and gain hands-on experience in a nurturing and inspiring environment. My time here was nothing short of transformative, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a remarkable organization.

Ben Price
Sales Intern

Ben Price's Experience with Kirkdale

This was an experience that I learnt so much from and as a result has given me more confidence to pursue my next endeavour. The biggest skill I feel I was able to develop while doing this role was self-initiative. Kasra and Matt trusted me with tasks such as performing sales quotes, contacting suppliers and clients and conducting sales calls. The trust that they gave me allowed me to think for myself and use my own approach which meant I was actively learning and practising what I learnt. Furthermore, through this opportunity I was exposed to the professional world in a way that I hadn’t been before. By going to client meetings with Kasra I was able to see how professionals conduct themselves and how solutions are achieved in real time.

With Kirkdale being a start up I was able to observe how Matt and Kasra ran their business on a daily basis and importantly how they overcame problems to get tasks done. This insight is of great value to me.

I was also shown how to operate areas of the back end of the Kirkdale website which was a skill that I had not developed before. Evie, who showed me these details, helped me to understand in a clear and concise way. This is a skill that I feel I can take with me wherever I go next. I think that being able to intern at Kirkdale Studios is an amazing opportunity for anyone who is looking to learn and develop themselves in the professional world.
