Our Bespoke Furniture for a new Cantonese Restaurant
6-of-1, the team behind Mr.Bao and Daddy Bao, are embarking in a new chapter, bringing their own take of modern Cantonese cuisine to East London.
At Kirkdale Studios, we were thrilled to design and install the bespoke furniture that reflects the modern yet authentic Honk Kong dining, with custom cosy booths and tables with lazy Susans.
Back in 2016, the hospitality group 6-of-1 opened their first restaurant, Mr. Bao in Peckham, offering Londoners their version of Taiwanese food.
Now, 10 years and several restaurants later, they are going beyond Taiwanese cuisine and created a space that celebrates both the traditional and modern side of Hong Kong dining.
The Concept
Located within the atmospheric railway arches of Mentmore Terrace, the venue is split into two distinct experiences. Guests first enter Wanton Charlie, an intimate bar dedicated to traditional noodle soups.
Passing through, they discover Café Kowloon: a modern Cantonese kitchen inspired by the cha chaan tengs (cafés) and dai pai dongs (open-air stalls) of Hong Kong.
Here diners can enjoy authentic Cantonese food but served with a playful, modern twist.
The Bespoke Furniture
Working alongside the designers at Daytrip Studio, we focused on creating a layout that celebrates the “communal spirit” central to Cantonese food culture. In a high-traffic restaurant environment, durability and flow are as important as aesthetics.
The Bespoke Fixed Seating
Our contribution to the fit-out included a suite of custom contract fixed seating designed to maximise the unique layout of the venue, such as a series of large U-shaped and L-shaped banquettes.
These provide a structured perimeter that houses smaller tables—perfect for pairs or solo diners looking for a quick, authentic bite amidst the restaurant’s buzz.
For those visiting in larger groups, our bespoke C-shaped booths offer a more social, enclosed experience.
These units comfortably accommodate up to 8 people, creating a intimate hub within the wider buzz of the restaurant.
All the fixed seating is fully upholstered in faux leather: the back rests are covered in Antique Leather by Panaz in the shade 300 Gold, and the seats in Mardi Gras by Spradling in the shade Monroe.
The Bespoke Tables with Lazy Susans
A staple of Cantonese dining, we integrated bespoke Lazy Susans into the larger group tables.
This allows for the seamless sharing of signature dishes like Typhoon Shelter Tofu and Char Siu Collar, bringing the authentic spirit of Hong Kong communal eating to East London.
We are pleased to have collaborated with 6-of-1 to create a new, lively venue in East London.
