Taking people on a experiential journey through nine individually different holes of anticipation, excitement, challenge and reward!

This crazy golf interior design project for Birdies was inspired by surrealism abstract interior design, which had bespoke banquet seating fitted throughout.

Birdies, the home of golf and good times, opened their flagship Angel site this Summer.  With a mission to turn the world of crazy golf on its head, they are all about mind-bending, visually ridiculous courses, with each of the holes bringing a new discovery, terrain and kaleidoscope of colour.

The team at Shed have made this venue stand out, and we were really pleased to be a part of their journey.

We talked to Shed about their design journey.

What were your initial Design inspirations?

Birdies had to stand for something they could own. So it was never about taking style references or design periods of inspiration. When the client asks you to put the crazy back into crazy golf it kind of gives you a free reign to interpret. Certainly was about creating an experience that differed from any of it’s competition. A take on surrealism and abstract interpretation from the origins of golf where nothing is real. This then allowed for a very different experience where people can interpret how they see it and experience it. Each to their own but a licence for Birdies to be known as that crazy venue different from any other.

What were the key design features included?

Every idea and hole concept has it’s origin in golf whether recognisable or not. Take Hole 4 ‘The Green’ for example. An obvious reference if you play golf but how could it be interpreted as a physical and playable experience..? Make everything you see and touch in green. A singular idea and may be slightly obvious but isn’t a pastiche replica of a traditional golf green. We apply the design idea through the Shed x Birdies filter process which allows for very alternative outcomes of hole designs and physical spaces.

Obvioulsy the large Bird is a signature icon for the venue. Building a hole concept around it (Hole 3 – Wing It!) means the venue has a recognisable oversized and slightly odd mascot. Look out for future takes on the Birdies birdies in venues to come.

Surrealism, abstract art and culture certainly played a big part in the inspiration process. Taking people on a experiential journey through nine individually different holes of anticipation, excitement, challenge and reward and hopefully leaving them with a memorable and fun experience is always the agenda. Through abstraction, play of light, vibrant graphic pattern and spatial topography aligned with the Shed x Birdies approach you can’t go to wrong…sometimes surprising yourself with the outcome!

Would you like to make any acknowledgements?

Close client team between Birdies and Shed as well as the principle contractor (Contrada) meant a good understanding of the design vision and how best to achieve. Especially with site constraints and limitations
